Publisher's Summary A New York Times Book Review Editors' Choice. An Amazon Best Science Book of 2014. A Scientific American Recommended Read. Deep is a voyage from the ocean's surface to its darkest trenches, the most mysterious places on Earth. Fascinated by the sport of freediving - in which competitors descend to great depths on a single breath - James Nestor embeds with a gang of oceangoing extreme athletes and renegade researchers. He finds whales that communicate with other whales hundreds of miles away, sharks that swim in unerringly straight lines through pitch-black waters, and other strange phenomena. Most illuminating of all, he learns that these abilities are reflected in our own remarkable and often hidden potential - including echolocation, directional sense, and the profound bodily changes humans undergo when underwater. Along the way Nestor unlocks his own freediving skills as he communes with the pioneers who are expanding our definition of what is possible in the natural world - and in ourselves. ©2014 James Nestor (P)2016 Audible, Inc.

I expected the book to be more about freediving but it's got decent coverage of the sport and some fun information about the depths of the ocean in general.

I’ve never read a book that is as informative as it is interesting. Inspiring is another adjective I’d use to describe it. The story is well written, keeps you on your toes and allows you to almost dive down with him as you listen. I’ve learned a lot from this book and hope to jump into my own research. I have found a new passion for free diving and breathing techniques. Thanks to James for getting his ass out there and writing about it. I Appreciate it more than I can explain!

I originally heard of James Nestor because of the Joe Rogan podcast. I didn't listen to the episode but I heard it was about breathing. I had recently listened to the oxygen advantage and Mr. Nestor was releasing his new book Breath. I wanted to listen to Deep first before Breath. Overall the book is fun, exciting, informative and concise. I found myself at several points very into the book itself and actually feeling panic imagining the dives he describes in the book. it was more than just a book on breathing, he gets to the roof of it. why people do it? it was a fun listen and James is a good author and narrator. looking forward to Breath.

This is an interesting look at freediving and its risks. The story isn't entirely about freediving, the author slides into other genres of diving. The audiobook was a valuable read because it tells the truth behind the dangers of deep, prolonged breath-hold diving and the history behind the professional breath-hold divers who gathered and salvaged from the bottom for hundreds of years.

I love the book it was very interesting to listen to I also came away with a greater understanding of the Sea and the great animals that live there I agree with the author but I think the sea animals are smarter than men I only hope that someday soon we all wake up and save our oceans
